Lots of people know about the St. Louis because President Roosevelt didn’t allow the ship with its Jewish passengers to dock in the United States. Yesterday I found out about The Portland by searching about information of the Jewish community in El Salvador. Yes, the Portland was just like the St. Louis. Why didn’t anyone from El Salvador ever tell me about that history? I heard the positive things about El Salvador and the formation of Israel. Why wasn’t I told?
I have read lots of books and I have wanted to learn more. For example, I thought of reading books about Trujillo and Batista, and I did a brief search about El Salvador. You can tell from my articles that I never found the books that would have satisfied my desire.
Maximiliano Martinez Hernandez was president and dictator of El Salvador, and I found out things about him that would provoke me to read a book about him.
A fascist who admired Hitler and Mussolini
He had favorable relations with Franco of Spain during the Spanish Civil War
El Salvador had big business with Germany and the United States, almost all of it the sale of coffee
July 30, 1939, 50 Jews who had paid for visas in Amsterdam and Budapest were denied entry into El Salvador as those visas were declared “fraudulent”
Keep in mind that was just one month before Hitler attacked Poland to begin World War II.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Martinez declared war on Japan and Germany. There was “economic and political pressure” placed on El Salvador. My own speculation is that it became extremely difficult to transport coffee to Germany and El Salvador would have been rocked with political difficulties including the communist threat in that country as poverty would be exponentially increased.
Of course I had been thinking of our own existential threat-Donald J. Trump. The St. Louis – The Portland and immigration issues which allegedly made America great. Nayib Bukele told the world that the wall will not keep America from experiencing high migrations. Benjamin Netanyahu backed away from supporting Trump’s wall after Mexican Jews reached out to him. And now consider with a raging conflict in Gaza and the Middle East that a poll of Israelis indicated (again) that twenty-five percent of the people are thinking about an exodus. And Trump’s policy right now would keep Jews out of the United States again. Of course, there must be lots of Israelis with dual citizenship as there are people all over the United States and the rest of the world.
I wrote about the great possibility this kind of conflict in 2019 while Trump was in office. And the divisiveness among Jews and other Americans allowed this situation to exist and now we are told that Israel is only days away from war and even possibly a nuclear attack. This should be another nail in Trump’s political coffin as I think, write, and attempt to influence people.
Martinez clearly was not Caucasian. And I have written about Mexican fascists in the 1930s and Black fascists in the United States (check my last article). Black people also wished to join Hitler’s youth in Germany.
Martinez after a long period in government was forced to flee El Salvador in 1944. He fled to Guatemala and he was assassinated in 1966 in Honduras.
Here are more details to know
Martinez was a nationalist
Martinez purged the military, promoting officers who were loyal to him
The military which wasn’t getting paid during the Depression overthrew President Araujo and made Martinez president
Martinez did not receive recognition from the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras because of seizing power which violated Article 2 of the treaty of “peace and amity” of 1923 which supported democratic procedures
Martinez forcefully crushed communists and other protestors…it was believed to get support from the United States
In 1937 the United States and El Salvador signed a commercial agreement which was no tariffs on coffee for El Salvador
The National Pro Patria party of Martinez became the only party in power
In 1934 there was discrimination against Arabic, Chinese, and Indian minorities in El Salvador
In 1939 Lebanese were now included in the discrimination
In 1943 things got worse for Chinese and Indians and Black people were forbidden to enter El Salvador
There was growing concern of the Nazis helping to overthrow the governments of Central America and uniting them
In June 1940 Martinez began to crack down on the Nazis
Martinez did not send soldiers to support the Allies after Pearl Harbor
There was an assassination attempt on Martinez in 1943
In 1944 a group was formed that overpowered Martinez and he fled
It wouldn’t be right to end this presentation of Martinez without these important details, thinking about COVID-19.
“He believed that sunlight cast through colored bottles could cure illnesses…When a smallpox epidemic broke out in San Salvador, Martínez ordered the hanging of colored lights in the city in an effort to cure the epidemic… When his youngest son became ill with appendicitis, he refused to allow a surgeon to operate on him. Martínez believed that water in blue bottles hit by sunlight would cure his son’s condition, and his son died without receiving proper medical treatment.” This is from Wikipedia.
Martinez was considered a “Brujo” or witch and here in the United States Trump is pretending that he is victim of a “witch hunt.” I was just thinking of those medications that Trump promoted and pumping bleach into cells to help rid people of COVID-19. And do not forget what MAGA supporter have done to Dr. Anthony Fauci over these years. I wonder if Fauci had called for casting light through bottles may have pleased Trump’s supporters.
Martinez was not unique in not sending troops to support the Allies. Franco and Salazar, although, they wrote the most loving letters to Hitler (thinking about Trump and Kim of North Korea) did not support Hitler militarily. They, too, depended on trade with England during WW II. Trump did not wish to help Ukraine in its darkest hour. Now he and JD Vance are talking about the possible start of World War III, which I wrote about when Putin attacked Ukraine.
Russian Military Presence in Cuba and Venezuela?
Posted January 16, 2022
Under “strongman” Donald Trump, Cuba should have been freed. But it is not! All that I am reading about the Cuban-Latino Miami and the election is the shift to the right and this is taking place without even a word about seven months of inserts in the Spanish newspaper El Heraldo that were anti-Semitic which […]

Find the article and read it. Now back to the news this week.
It has been mentioned already by the Russian government as the United States tries to help the Ukraine right now. And I wrote about Cuba and Venezuela months ago and in the same breath I wrote about the coming of World War III. So where do we begin? We begin by doing out (our) best to explain the truth in a nation where there is so much misinformation. It is true that the bad news coming from the Ukraine has happened under President Biden, but does that mean that Trump was a great protector of the aspirations of the Cuban and Venezuelan people in the United States? My point of view is that if Trump were building a strong house of support for those families who aspire more for the nations that they came from, then we now see very quickly that the cement or foundation of all that seems to be eroding with the words of the Russian government.
Yes, the Russia navy has visited a communist nation south of Florida in Cuba. Yes, China and Russia conducted a joint air exercise in June near Alaska recently. Yes, Russians are making news about Russia taking Alaska back from the United States. All of this was easily predictable if you know history and know Putin. Trump could have given Putin the green light to do things. Or his own weakness helped to push Putin to do it. It took those two Republicans almost two years to talk about World War III and they want to control our future? I do not wish this upon any nation.
And will there be a need for a Tel Aviv ship asking for permission to dock in the United States? That question should be taken to all communities that have rejected migrants now. Asylum is needed for all people.
